A Mother’s Journey: Raising a Deaf Child in Kenya

When my son Mark was born, I dreamed of his milestones, his laughter, and his future. At age three, a sudden illness changed our lives forever. Mark became Deaf, and our family entered a world filled with whispered prayers, therapies, and difficult decisions. We knocked on many school doors but found few that were ready to welcome a Deaf child. The pain of rejection pushed us to create learning opportunities at home. Later, we made the choice to relocate so that our children could attend an inclusive school together. Our story is one of heartbreak, resilience, and hope. Many families in Kenya face similar struggles as they seek schools that value their children and support their dreams. This blog is a call to action for policymakers, educators, and communities to make inclusive education a reality. Together, we can build schools that welcome every child and ensure that no family has to face these challenges alone.
